Kalamandir Dance Company seeks male and female dancers from all dance backgrounds to join the 2010-2011 season. Experience in classical Indian dance (especially Odissi) a plus.
Kalamandir Dance Company is a contemporary ensemble that creates a new language by breaking through the boundaries of classical Indian Dance. Our movement vocabulary creates a reachable area for all people to participate and communicate. Instead of diminishing the foundation of our art, we look to investigate its potential. We are devoted to ‘art for art’s sake’, and are driven by creativity, human emotions, and a desire to be released from the ordinary, the four walls of our daily existence.
Artistic Director Malabika Guha grew up in Shantiniketan, India (home of Rabindranath Tagore’s university). She is a disciple of Guru Bela Arnob in Kolkata, India. She was also a professional dancer in Uday Shankar’s India Cultural Center, and learned and performed creative and kathak dance for more than 20 years. When she moved to America in the 1970s, she opened Kalamandir of NJ, a kathak and creative dance school that is going on its 26th year to date (www.njkalamandir.webs.com). She traveled with her advanced troupe to India, London, Canada, Spain and both east and west coasts of America. ” I dream one day my students will feel the dedication I have seen in my guru’s eyes. They will experience the sensation of being immersed in a larger universe with a sense of creative joy as my teachers in Shantiniketan made me feel. And they will feel the team spirit and camaraderie I have felt as a part of Uday Shankar’s troupe. G
