Looking to cast for the following roles:
Navin, a 26-32 year old Indian man
Navin was born and raised in Brooklyn by his Indian grandmother. He is an only child. His mother died when he was young and he only saw his father during seldom visits. Navin’s father works for NGOs in India and constantly travels back and forth between the continents. Navin is caught between his Indian heritage and the American culture he grew up in. While he grew up speaking Gujarati and watching his grandmother practice Hinduism, Navin has always fought to fit into the American life and be like his American friends. After his grandmother tried to convince him to get engaged to an Indian girl that he hardly knows, he escaped during a pre-wedding ceremony and did not return home for over 5 years. He did not contact her either, partly out of guilt, partly to avoid further conflict. He is now engaged to Laura, who he met 3 years ago, and is ready to start a family. Laura often asks about his family and he feels that it is time to return home and introduce Laura to his grandmother.
GRANDMOTHER, 60 years old, Indian, friendly looking
Is very traditional from the Kshatriya caste and is not integrated in the American culture at all. She spends time in her Indian community and hardly ever interacts with Americans. She raised her grandchild Navin, who ran away when she tried to arrange a marriage for him. She is lonely and spends her time cooking, chanting and watching Bollywood movies.
