THE IDES OF MARCH is the winning play of the company’s annual playwright competition. Written by Leo Cabranes Grant, it explores issues of emotional loss, relationships, and non-traditional families in the context of recent political and cultural events. The plot unfolds around Alejandro, an elderly Puerto Rican painter living in San Francisco that is starting to experience memory lapses while trying to preserve the images of his dead lover and his sense of dignity in front of his daughter and a devoted friend. The play situates us inside his increasingly fragmented world.
The play is mostly in English (95%). All actors must speak fluent and precise English.
Roles open for audition are as follows:
Alejandro Ortiz, (LEAD) a robust, but not very agile, Puerto Rican painter, 70 years old. Actor must be comfortable with kissing another male actor.
Marisela Ortiz, his daughter, a voracious academic professor, up for tenure and under a lot of stress, 28 years old
Efraín López, an extremely thin, preferably dark skinned Puerto Rican, 17 years old. Almost elongated, like a figure painted by El Greco. His movements are very deliberate and precise, as if he were a soldier.
Susan Yang, an Asian-American nurse, a strongly built woman, 55 years old.
