Featured Production (Boulder Fringe Festival):
THE LOVE OF THREE ORANGES is a comedic story based upon the traditions of the classic Commedia Dell Arte style. Set in a fairy tale land far, far away, the King is upset that his son, Prince Tartaglia has contracted hypochondria and can no longer laugh. Meanwhile two jealous ministers to the king plot to kill the ailing prince. Ultimately Fata Morgana, an evil witch curses the prince to a “love of three oranges.” The prince sets out on a short adventure to find his lovely oranges.
The origins of Commedia Dell Arte (meaning “the art of comedy”) date back to the mid 16th Century in Italy. This style of comedy uses masks to create stock characters that interact in small, improvised scenes. There are rumors that Commedia only performed on the streets, when in fact, they were organized companies of actors. The original forms of Commedia were entirely improvised using only the basic stock characters; Zani, Pantalone, The Lovers, Dottore, and Capitano. Later plays such as this one were adapted based on the original two page scenarios.
