The Athenians:
Theseus, Duke of Athens, (Male Authority) Won the heart of Hippolyta after winning the war against her country.
Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons, betrothed of Theseus. Female warrior, tamed by love and rationalization.
Egeus, father of Hermia, forces Hermia to marry Demetrius. Represents the epitome of a stern, uncompromising character that would have his daughter put to death rather than marry a man whom he disapproves of.
Lysander, is in love with Hermia but is considered not to be of proper social “status” by her father. However, he is a romantic and a realist.
Helena, is in love with Demetrius and is thought to be passive. However, she betrays the trust of her friend in her efforts to purse the attention of the man she loves.
Demetrius, is in love with Hermia and Helena at different times of the play. His changing heart reveals that he is romantically irrational and fanciful.
Hermia, is charming, spirited and has a quick temper. She is thought to be a vixen by her father but truly loves Lysander even though her father disapproves.
Philostrate, Master of the Revels for Theseus
Royal Court Ensemble Attendants to the Duke of Athens & Hippolyta
