Face the Music is NYC’s only “alt-classical” teen ensemble, made up of more than seventy unusually talented students from in and around New York City. The Face the Music kids have played at all kinds of places, including Le Poisson Rouge, Roulette, the Tribeca New Music Festival, and the Bang On A Can Marathon. Most recently, the students opened for the Philip Glass Ensemble at the River to River Festival. The group has been featured on WQXR’s Young Artist Showcase, NPR’s All Things Considered, and a live broadcast marking the opening of NY Public Radio’s Jerome L. Greene Performance Space. In 2011, Face the Music was honored with the ASCAP Aaron Copland Award. In March 2012, Allan Kozinn wrote an article on on Face the Music for the New York Times, which you can read here:
We hold auditions each summer for the next year’s season. 2011-2012 highlights included:
Glassworks as an opening set for the Phillip Glass Ensemble as part of the River to River Festival, the World Premiere of El Gran Caleidiscopio – Angelica Negron (including a shared concert with Angelica and Balun), performances at Queens Museum of Art, Roulette, Issue Project Room and other exciting venues, as well as coachings with Brad Lubman (Signal Ensemble), Eric Jacobsen (The Knights), Ljova (Ljova and the Kontraband) and others.
We have plans for an exciting 2012-2013 year and currently have openings for viola, cello, French horn, bassoon, and soprano sax. Other instruments are welcome to audition.
