On April 16 and 17, Houston Grand Opera will hold auditions for the featured role of “Ellie” and for understudies for the roles of “Frank” and “Ellie” in a production of the classic musical SHOW BOAT to be staged during HGO’s 2012-13 season. SHOW BOAT will be directed by Francesca Zambello, choreographed by Michele Lynch, and conducted by HGO’s Artistic and Music Director Patrick Summers.
Ellie / Ellie understudy – Ellie is a spunky, vibrant, and funny Caucasian female. She is youngish, but has been around the block (but is not jaded). She is an excellent dancer. Vocally, she is a light, perky, Broadway-soubrette (light lyric voice) – NOT a belter.
Frank understudy – Frank, a Caucasian male, is a showman to the core, a man of the theater who must sing and dance to live, despite the many ups and downs of an entertainer’s life. Vocally, he is a colorful tenor or baritone who can really sell the text.
All interested candidates should have FULL AVAILABILITY to be called up to 30 hours per week during the period of December 13, 2012 through February 9, 2013. Candidates should have ballet, musical theater, and partner work training. For the singing component of the audition, candidates should prepare two contrasting songs from the classic Broadway repertoire (Rodgers, Kern, Porter, Gershwin, etc.) – one comic song, one serious song. Candidates should reserve the entire day of April 16 and the afternoon of April 17, 2012 for auditions and call-backs.
The artist selected as Ellie will be compensated at the rate of $2,250 per week for the production period. Artists selected as Frank and Ellie understudies will be compensated at the rate of $1,550 per week to be engaged as members of the dance ensemble and to rehearse and/or perform the named roles as necessary.
