Play Synopsis

“But for Grace” is a short play (15-20 minutes) about a medical doctor named Benavides who, fed up with red tape
and some people’s phoney regard for human life, gives up his practice to open a shelter. Soon, however, the shelter runs out of money and Benavides finds himself on the streets. The experience gives him a new perspective on homelessness and how best to help the people he feels he was born to help.

Ms. Hansen is the recipient of the 2009 Cathy Award for Best Original Writing as well as Best Production/Direction
for her short play, “Buying Back Brooklyn” which was presented by the Gulfport Community Players. She is a 2007 graduate of Eckerd College’s Creative Writing program, and is currently a graduate student at University of Denver pursuing her Master’s Degree in Arts and Culture with a concentration in Creative Writing.

“But for Grace,” a play focusing on solutions to homelessness, will be presented at the Concrete Solutions
to End Homelessness Conference presented by Celebrate Outreach, Inc. The play will be presented at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg, Harbor Hall, on Saturday,
November 17, 2012 at 12:00 noon. The conference and play are being presented as a part of National Hunger and
Homelessness Awareness Week.
