Theatre Arts School of San Diego presents
“AVERAGE/EXTRAORDINARY”
a video play
“AVERAGE/EXTRAORDINARY” is a ground-breaking project in which young people (ages 8-18) will take part in all aspects of the play’s development. They will interview seemingly average citizens, learn their stories, wisdom, ideas and dreams – and, in doing so, will understand that no one is truly average. Each one of us is extraordinary.
This is the March/April project of the Production and Performance class at Theatre Arts School of San Diego. Led by school director Courtney Corey, whose credits include WICKED and RENT and is also one of San Diego Magazine’s “50 People To Watch in 2013,” students will partake in all aspects of this project such as writing, design, production, and performance.
“AVERAGE/EXTRAORDINARY” is a project that will not only teach the aspects of creating a theatrical piece, but will teach empathy and compassion, encourage positive thinking and empowerment, and inspire community. It is a departure from norm youth theatre productions. Students work together to create their own art. Their voices will be clearly heard in this piece. They will have a truly unique performance opportunity.
Theatre Arts School of San Diego is currently accepting submissions for this project. All submissions are due by Thursday, February 28. No head shots or resumes are required. Please send a short essay written by student (parents can help the younger ones) and send to: Info@TheatreArtsSD.org
Essay should answer the following question:
“What makes you extraordinary?”
(We want the students to reflect on something about themselves that makes them feel special or different. This may be a tough question, but know that within all of us lies something extraordinary. We each have a unique story.)
The “AVERAGE/EXTRAORDINARY” project is not audition based. We will accept the first 25 people that submit essays. (A minimum of 5 students are required.) Those students must register in the Production and Performance class at Theatre Arts School of San Diego. The class meets on Thursdays from 4:30-6. The project spans two months, beginning on March 7 and ending on May 2. Attendance is required at all class meetings. (If a student has any conflicts, please make note of that in the submission.)
Class fee: $220 (includes all classes and supplies)
There is no performance fee.
The performance of “AVERAGE/EXTRAORDINARY” will take place on the evening of Sunday, May 5.
