LAMONT CAREY is a native of Washington, DC and an internationally renowned spoken word artist, filmmaker, author, and motivational speaker. He has appeared on such stages as HBO “Def Poetry Jam” and BET “Lyric Café.” His company LaCarey Entertainment was instrumental in casting over 200 actors including himself on HBO’s critically acclaimed and Peabody Award winning drama series The Wire. Coming off the heels of sold-out workshop performances, a full-length production of THE ENGAGEMENT ran Off-Off Broadway in 2006 and 2007. THE ENGAGEMENT is coming to Washington, DC to gear up for a national tour in 2014.
Story Line: This is a comedic drama about self-discovery, friendships, and love. Taken straight out of national headlines, THE ENGAGEMENT is a theatrical exploration of the issue of same-sex marriage and its impact on individuals, families and society. It tells the story of Faith and Deja who have been in a relationship for eight months and have decided to get married. But their fanfare wedding won’t take place without a hitch, including interfering friends, siblings, and lovers. Faith’s close friend Nicole is a straight girl with man trouble who has her own agenda. Deja, who is estranged from her family, also brings emotional baggage to the impending union. Things hit home full force with the arrival of Faith’s ex-girlfriend Stacy, who left her for a man and will stop at nothing to now win Faith back.
