Please prepare a musical theatre song which best shows off your voice, and bring sheet music in the correct key (accompanist will be provided). You may sing from the show, but it is not required. Be prepared to read from the script.
Show dates: October 4-6, 2013
Rehearsals begin early August.
Weeknight rehearsals with some Sundays. (Please note: not all actors will be called at all rehearsals)
**Director’s Note: Those auditioning are encouraged to view clips of the original documentary and/or the 2009 HBO film adaptation with Drew Barrymore & Jessica Lange. Both can be found on YouTube. The songs from “Grey Gardens” are intensely character driven and tell the audience about the personalities and motivations of these fascinating real people. Please, make sure you familiarize yourself with both the music and the meaning of the lyrics. We are looking for portrayals that capture the eccentricities of these women, but do not treat them as caricatures
About the Show: “Grey Gardens” is based Albert and David Maysles legendary cult documentary about Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis’ eccentric aunt and cousin. This touching – and sometimes heart-wrenching musical adaption explores the relationship between former socialite Edith Bouvier Beale and her daughter, Little Edie. Once the highest of high society, the two have become East Hampton’s most notorious recluses, living in a dilapidated 28-room mansion with 51 cats, cobwebs and virtually no plumbing. Set in two eras – 1941 when the celebrated estate was the picture of wealth and sophistication, and 1975 after it had been reduced to squalor – Grey Gardens is the hilarious and heartbreaking look at two indomitable women. Propelled by a witty book, gorgeous score, intricate lyrics, and tour-de-force roles, this musical has become an instant and well-loved classic.
