Theatre Perception Consortium is casting for “Sick and Tired”,the story of Fannie Lou Hamer. At the age of 44, she was one of the first to volunteer to register to vote. Hamer received constant death threats, was shot at, jailed and beaten by the police for and even thrown off the plantation where she lived for over eighteen years for taking up this fight. Hamer would not be discouraged, and she traveled around the country speaking and registering people to vote. Hamer co-founded the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party (MFDP) who challenged the all-white Mississippi delegation to the Democratic National Convention in 1964. Hamer spoke in front of the Credentials Committee in a televised proceeding that reached millions of viewers. As a result of her speech, two delegates of the MFDP were given speaking rights at the convention and the other members were seated as honorable guests. Hamer was an inspirational figure to many involved in the struggle for civil rights.
