BUDDY: The Buddy Holly Story

Shining Light Productions and the Stadium Theatre are proud to announce auditions for their production of the rock and roll musical, BUDDY: The Buddy Holly Story. The auditions will be held at the historic Stadium Theatre in Woonsocket, RI on Wednesday, September 24 and Thursday, September 25 from 6:30pm to 9:30pm.
We are looking for actors, musicians and singers for our production. Please bring sheet music for a 1950’s or 60’s pop or rock song in the correct key for your voice or instrument. Musicians (except keyboardists,) need to bring their own instruments. Our music director will accompany the auditioning singers.
Rehearsals: Rehearsals will begin the week of October 19, 2014. In general, our rehearsals are Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 6:30-9:30 pm. Musicians and singers will be scheduled to attend only the rehearsals specific to their portions of the show. Every effort to coordinate with work and family schedules is made, especially during the holiday season; everyone auditioning will need to provide information regarding any conflicts with the rehearsal days. Further rehearsal information will be provided at the auditions.
Show Schedule: The performances are at the Stadium Theatre on Friday, January 23 at 7:30pm, Saturday, January 24 at 7:30pm and Sunday, January 25 at 2:00pm.
Auditions are being held for the following characters, musicians and additional singers:
Musicians will play in different combinations in the various bands in the story; some will also act the minor character roles.
Buddy Holly (age 18-30, to play 25): Intelligent, charismatic and energetic with the ability to play guitar, act, sing and have a feel for rock ‘n’ roll. Must possess some serious star potential and have a desire to live as a rock ‘n’ roll superstar every night.
Jerry Allison (age 18-30, to play 25): Drummer from Lubbock, Texas. Good looking, irrepressible cheeky humor with musical ability and the ability to act.
Joe B. Mauldin (age 18-30, to play 25): Double Bass player from Lubbock, Texas. Serious, square young man with musical ability and the ability to act.
Norm Petty: A record producer from Clovis, New Mexico, with a businesslike manner and a love for making records. Must be a strong actor and the ability to sing is an added plus but not necessary.
J.P. Richardson ‘The Big Bopper’ (age 20-35, to play 29): The songwriter/singer, best known for “Chantilly Lace.” He is an exuberant performer with excellent pop singing ability and comedic timing to re-create this famous song. This actor may also play additional minor characters.
Ritchie Valens (Hispanic ethnicity, age 18-25, to play 18): a guitarist/singer most well-known for the hit song “La Bamba.” Energetic and charismatic, he was an exciting performer. Ability to play the guitar is a plus but not necessary. This actor may also play additional minor characters.
Hi Pockets Duncan (age 30-55): disc jockey in Lubbock, TX who advises Buddy. He serves as a narrator between some segments of the story.
Vi Petty (age 25-40): Caucasian female keyboardist/actress with boogie woogie, jazz or pop music experience, she is the wife of record producer, Norm Petty.
Tommy Alsup (age 18-30): rhythm electric guitarist with pop/rock experience who sometimes worked with Buddy as the ‘fourth Cricket.’ Please bring your own guitar to the audition.
Maria Elena Santiago-Holly (age 18-30): She meets and marries Buddy following a whirlwind one-day romance. Attractive and strong-willed. Must have an excellent ear for the Puerto Rican dialect and sing harmonies well.
Senora Provi Garcia (age 30-45): Maria Elena’s aunt, she speaks in Spanish and in English, with a pronounced Puerto Rican dialect.
Murray Deutsch (Caucasian, age 30 – 55): a producer in New York at the studio where the Crickets record. Preference for a musician to also play in the Hayriders and/or Clear Lake bands, but not necessary.
Apollo Theatre musicians (African-American males, ages 20 – 45): tenor or baritone saxophonist, and an upright bassist, (other instruments could be considered,) as performers at The Apollo and in other scenes. Please bring your own instruments to the audition.
Apollo Theatre singers (African-American females, ages 20 – 45): experienced singers with strong harmonic, pop/rock or rhythm & blues singing skills to play performers at The Apollo and in other scenes.
Hayriders C&W and Clear Lake Musicians (any ethnicity, ages 15 – 45): with excellent musicianship and proficiency who play trumpet, trombone, saxophone, violin (and country/western fiddle.) Please bring your own instruments to the audition.
Ensemble Singers (any ethnicity, males and females, ages 16 – 35): Experienced singers with excellent harmonic abilities as back up vocalists and to play some minor characters in various scenes.
