Queen Latifah’s Bessie Smith Biopic – casting call in Atlanta

By | May 22, 2014

Queen Latifah will be starring and producing a new HBO movie about blues great Bessie Smith.

Academy Award winning actress, hip hop legend and Cover Girl model, Queen Latifah will take the lead role in the production.

Bessy Smith is considered to be the greatest blues singer of all time and went on to be one of the highest paid African American actresses of her time, the 1920’s. She made a name for herself performing in cabarets and vaudeville shows where she sang alongside another blues great, Ma Rainey. Ma Rainey had earned the title’mother of the blues’. Bessie became so successful as a singer and vaudevillian performer that ended up the highest paid African American actress during the 1920s. Ultimately, the Great Depression affected her career as it did many others during that time. Bessie died in a car accident in the 30’s, she was only in her 40’s.

Dee Rees be directing the biopic which was called “Bessie” in many entertainment outlets, but may actually be called “Blue Goose Hollow“. Guess we’ll see what the title ends up being.  According to Deadline, joining Queen Latifah will be Mo’Nique & Khandi Alexander. Mo’Nique is set to play Ma Rainey in the Biopic. Alexander will be playing Bessie’s sister. There is a popular story about Bessie and Ma Rainey which says that Ma Rainey kidnapped Bessie, forced her to join ger group, the Rabbit Foot Minstrels and taught the young Bessie to sing.

Is there anything Queen Latifah can’t do? Doesn’t seem there is.
