MOORPARK COLLEGE THEATRE ARTS HOLDS AUDITIONS FOR HIT BROADWAY MUSICAL “HAIRSPRAY”
The Moorpark College Theatre Arts Department announces auditions for its upcoming Spring 2016 production of the high-energy Broadway mega-hit “Hairspray.” Preliminary musical auditions will be held on Monday, December 7th from 6:00-10:00pm, Dance Auditions on Tuesday December 8th from 3:30-6:30pm with callbacks on Monday December 14th from 6:00-10:00pm. Auditions will be held in the main stage theatre in the Performing Arts Center on the Moorpark College campus. Anyone interested in auditioning should bring 30 bars of sheet music from an up-tempo song and be prepared to dance and read from the script. An accompanist will be present for the auditions.
“Hairspray,” winner of 8 Tony Awards including Best Musical, hits the Moorpark College main stage and you just “Can’t Stop the Beat!” It’s 1962 in Baltimore, and the lovable plus-size teen Tracy Turnblad has only one desire — to dance on the popular Corny Collins Show. When her dream comes true, Tracy is transformed from social outcast to sudden star. She must use her newfound power to dethrone the reigning Teen Queen, win the affections of heartthrob Link Larkin, and integrate a TV network, all without denting her ‘do!
“This will easily be the largest production we have ever produced,” said John Loprieno, director and Theatre Arts Department Chair. “Beth Megill, professional dancer/choreographer and member of the Moorpark College Dance faculty, will be staging the atomic-energy dance numbers and Marilyn Anderson, of our Music Department faculty will once again be our Musical Director.” “Between the full-integration of HD video projections, live Rock and Roll music and explosive dance numbers that will have you dancing in the aisles, the students at Moorpark are already buzzing around the PAC,” said Loprieno. “While we certainly chose this show to be a huge draw for our students and the community, I love the message of this play. The celebration of diversity on all levels is a theme that we need to hear more than ever these days, and what better way to embody those values than through a full scale musical comedy? We’re hoping to draw in many new cast members from our student body and the community for these auditions!” Anyone who is cast must register for the 3 unit THA M10: Theatre Production class.
“Hairspray” will run March 3 – March 20, 2016 with evening performances from Thursday to Saturday @ 8:00pm and Sunday matinees @ 2:00pm in the studio theatre at Moorpark College.
