THE BOX

Location: Singapore

Type: Student Films

Casting Call: THE BOX
We are a group of five students from Raffles Girls’ School (Secondary) producing a student short film that will be submitted to the 7th Singapore Short Film Awards, other national competitions, and uploaded on various internet platforms.

THE BOX is a short film about the psychological effects of racial stereotypes in media. The film opens with the Indian main character, Ambika, alone watching a TV show and trying to stomach its racial stereotypes. These stereotypes come to life in XX1 and XX2, who appear in the room, smearing paint on Ambika, leaving her with a stark reminder of her skin colour, and what it may mean to others. XX1 and XX2 slowly ensnare Ambika into thinking their way, and the film ends with Ambika conforming to these stereotypes and the general societal reception towards them.

Character Roles:
AMBIKA [Female] [Indian] [Age: 15-21]
Ambika is a young adult who watches TV. She starts off perfectly normal, but over time XX1 and XX2, as personifications of negative stereotypes, slip past her defenses. She tries to fight back against XX1 and XX2 but eventually succumbs.

Actress has to be okay with contact with other actors’/actress’ arms and face and enacting out stage violence.

XX1 [Male/Female] [Indian] [Age:15-21]
XX1 is a character in a TV show and eventually comes to life as a personification of Indian stereotypes and the “infection” of these stereotypes throughout the media’s audience are observed through scenes of XX1 smearing paint onto Ambika. XX1 is flamboyant and puts on an exaggerated Indian accent.

Actress has to be okay with contact with other actors’/actress’ arms and face and enacting out stage violence.

XX2 [Male/Female] [Chinese] [Age:15-21]
XX2 is a character in a TV show and comes to life to present the general mocking view of minority characters in the media and the influence of these stereotypes throughout the media’s audience are observed through scenes of XX1 smearing paint onto Ambika. XX2 is sarcastic, often mocking his peers.

Actor has to be okay with contact with other actors’/actress’ arms and face and enacting out stage violence.

(MINOR ROLE) CHILD [Male/Female] [Indian/Malay] [Age: 7-13]
CHILD represents the undying cycle of influence by the media as our film may seem to imply that what happens to Ambika may happen to other people such as CHILD.

Actor/actress will have a very minor role. No physical contact will be made.
