All families have their problems but not all families are fighting over a music dynasty.
There are special places in this earth. Memphis Tennessee is one of those places. It saw the birth of more musical genres than anywhere else in the planet.
Royal studios is the most sought after recording mecca for artists from the 50’s to today.
Willie Mitchell started it in 1957 and was the first producer to put musical icons including Al Green and chuck berry on the map.
Today the next generation has taken over and produced artists including John Mayer, snoop dog and Bruno Mars .
And to this day the recording studio is run by the same family.
Willie Mitchell started the company and now his son boo is the producer and creative mind of the artists and Oona runs the business.
Aunts Loraine and Yvonne have gone from being backup singers for Al green to the backbone on the family with a mission of keeping it all on track.
But like any family, they have their problems.
In the 90’s boo and his brother Archie were a successful music duo – known as the m-team.
They had a falling out… and the family decided to kick Archie out.
But everyone in town knows Archie is a music genius and a fighter… who just started a new company across town.
He and his son Archie junior are taking the rest of the family head on.
Now its Mitchell vs Mitchell.
Both sides want to take their business to the next level and not just record artists, but start signing them to their own label.
As a studio you get payed to produce and record music, but having your own label means managing the artists and making big money off the music royalties.
And on the royal side, the whole family is helping to make it happen.
As the royal family of memphis, they dont just produce music they produce and host major music events around the world – including the memphis music hall of fame
This year keith richards and justin timberline are being inducted… and along for the ride is his best friend jimmy fallon
Boo and Oona are producing the entire event… and the pressure is one
Aunts lorraine and yvonne have been with royal since the beginning and take no shit… and they do all the catering
Boo’s son Uriah is an up and coming rapper.
And his other son Elijah is a producer, following his dad’s footsteps.
And the rest of the kids have to help out too.
Aunts Lorraine and Yvonne make sure everybody does their job and take care of the most important part… the catering.
And the next generation in the Mitchell family is ready to take over.
Boos son’s Uriah and Elijah want to take over the business.
And with the recent success of uptown funk, many of the industry want a piece of the royal pie.
Oona wants Archie back in the family fold. Instead of competing in the music business, they should be working together.
But boo and Archie have not talked to each other in 3 years.
Oona called Aj and the two of them have a plan to get the brothers back together
They want to reunite the family and take the business to the next level.
