Don’t Be Afraid: Emerson College Bachelor of Fine Arts Thesis Short Film

Location: Boston, MA

October 29th & 30th
November 5th, 6th, 12th, & 13th
December 3rd & 4th

Rate: Paid; Meals provided

Union and nonunion actors are welcome.

Auditions may be scheduled via email between 10:00am-7:00pm on September 24th or between 12:00-4:00pm on Sunday September 25th. Appointments are made on a first come, first serve basis.

*Sides should be memorized for audition. Please be prepared for a cold reading.

Don't Be Afraid movie

Character Breakdown:

Hattie: Lead (F, 9-12, African American) A nerdy girl who is horribly bullied by a racist schoolmate.
(Note: Must be willing to style hair if necessary, must be able to give a strong, dramatic performance.)

Billy: Lead (M, 10-13, Caucasian) The bully. A vulgar, aggressive, adolescent boy who parrots his father’s racist and misogynistic views due to his own insecurities.
(Note: Must be comfortable wearing colored eye contacts, must be able to give a strong, dramatic performance.)

Jordan: Supporting (F, 30-40s, African American) Hattie’s Mother. A strong, supportive, and loving mother who wants to help Hattie adjust to their new home.
(Note: Must be able to give a strong, dramatic performance)

Emily: Supporting (F, 9-12, Caucasian) Billy’s sister. She is timid, bullied by her brother, and afraid to speak out on Hattie’s behalf.

Andrew: Supporting (M, 10-13, Caucasian) Billy’s friend. He joins in with Billy with whatever he does, including bullying Hattie, because he thinks Billy is cool and tough.

Mei Hua: Supporting (F, 9-13, Asian) Sweet and bubbly, she becomes Hattie’s friend.

Chandi: Supporting (F, 9-13, Indian) Sympathetic and understanding, she becomes
Hattie’s friend.

Maria: Supporting (F, 9-13, Hispanic) Kind and approachable, she becomes Hattie’s friend.

Jessica: Supporting (F, 9-13, Caucasian) Outgoing and fun, she becomes Hattie’s friend.
