Auditions: Chapter Two by Neil Simon

Location: San Diego, CA

Type: Theater

Recent widower and writer George Schneider, is encouraged by his younger brother Leo to start dating again. Which sends George into even more depression after a series of bad matches. Then, Leo comes up with Jennie Malone and she’s a keeper. Still, it’s a bumpy trip on the road to Dreamland for these not-so-young lovers. George and Jennie stumble on, overcoming both their hesitation on the rebound and emotional neediness. In a hilarious, farcical subplot, Leo has a fling with Faye, Jennie’s neurotic married friend.

No appointments necessary. Readings will be from the script, of which several copies will be available at the auditions. The time from 7 to 7:30 pm will be set aside for actors to consult the sides of the script that will be used for the readings. Actual audition readings will begin at 7:30 pm.

You may email the director after March 1, 2016, if you wish, and request a list of the audition sides. The script should be readily available on Amazon and in the local libraries, but cold readings will work perfectly fine as well.

All roles are available:

George Schneider (Lead Role) – A successful writer in New York in his early forties. He is an attractive man who seems tired and depressed when we first meet him, returning from a less than satisfying solo tour of Europe. George has been recently widowed, and try though he might, he cannot erase the vivid image of his dead wife at every turn. He is very glib
and clever when he wants to be, but often finds himself at a loss for words these days.

Jennie Malone (Lead Role) – A somewhat successfully employed actress in her early to mid-thirties. She is attractive, stylish and depressed because of her recent divorce. She is a terrific girl, smart, cute, and quite emotional. She has moments of true joy and hilarity, followed by moments of deep anguish and despair. Jennie is captivated by George’s quirky sense of humor and obvious need when she first meets him. Later, she is not quite sure how to handle his guilt over still missing his wife. The wedge this drives into their relationship is almost too much for her to bear.

Leo Schneider (Major Supporting Role) – A Broadway publicist who is forty. He is married with children, but still has quite an active “roving eye” for the ladies. He becomes Jennie’s best friend, and learns a lot about himself in the process. But, he really cares for his brother and worries about him at this point in his life. He tries to get George to date again, but the women he comes up with for his brother are far from ideal. Until he introduces him to Jennie.

Faye Medwick (Major Supporting Role) – Another New York actress who is Jennie’s best friend. she is in her early thirties. Faye is very attractive and has a breezy, sunny personality, but she is trapped in a somewhat boring marriage. She desperately wants to find Jennie a soulmate, but is a woefully inept matchmaker. It is she that becomes the woman Leo tries to have an affair with, which only adds to her neurotic problems.
