Oprah Winfrey’s “Queen Sugar” television series is beginning production and has a casting notice out in the Nola area.
The show is casting for various small roles, extras and stand-ins. Caballero casting announced that they are now accepting submissions for talent of all ages including kids. There are also small recurring roles available for kids who are home schooled or able to take off of school for multiple days. The casting directors are particularly interested in adults with actual farming experience, basketball players and those with character face and weathered looks. “Queen Sugar” is scheduled to film beginning this month and into the summer around the New Orleans, Louisiana and St. James Parish areas.
The new show is created, directed and executive produced by Ava DuVernay (Selma) and Oprah Winfrey. Winfrey and DuVernay worked on the 2014 film Selma together. Ava DuVernay is writing and directing the new show which was picked up by OWN for 13 episodes. The new show features a completely female directorial team. “Queen Sugar” is based on a novel with same name written by Natalie Baszile which follows the lives of two sisters, Nova Bordelon played by Rutina Wesley and Charley Bordelon played by Dawn-Lyen Gardner. Oprah Winfrey is executive producing the new show. Winfrey will also have a recurring role in the show.
One of the sisters is a journalist from New Orleans, the other is a woman with a teen daughter living in Los Angeles. After receiving an inheritance of a sugarcane farm in Louisiana, the woman and her daughter move from Los Angeles to live on the farm.
