Show Up – Written by: Paloma Valenzuela, Produced by: J. Blaise
Location: North Hollywood, CA (Los Angeles area)
Independent production. No Pay
Show Up by Paloma Valenzuela approaches issues women deal with in the entertainment industry told through the stories of video models. Show Up deals with internal battles and insecurities that women must cope with as a result of being seen as sex symbols; luscious body parts and beautiful nameless faceless.
The concept is that these women, while at their audition for a popular and raunchy rap music video, decide to simply not show up to the shoot. During their “auditions” we meet them, and through monologues, poems, and abstract scenes we see their personal stories unfold. As a threading storyline, while discovering the lives of all of these women, we see, the stress that this particular rapper goes through after realizing his booty-shaking models are never going to show up to the shoot. He is forced to find creative ways to shoot this music video without them. What would happen if these women never showed up? This piece plays with that concept, while revealing something about these women you might have never taken the time to even ask about.
