Actress Auditions in The Boston Area for Short Film

We are auditioning for one character, Bess, a young (20’s) Latina female. Bess, is educated and articulate, soft spoken but not meek.

The short film is based on a story by Ernest Hemingway “Hills Like White Elephants” The screenplay, adapted by Stephen Loughran, runs about 10 minutes and will be shot in the boston area this spring/summer.

AUDITION DATE AND LOCATION: Friday May 19, 2017 – Arts At The Armory, Somerville, MA

 

SYNOPSIS: Bess and her lover sit together at Anderson station waiting for the next train to Boston, which arrives in 10 minutes. The tension is thick. Bess’ lover attempts to engage in conversation. Clearly distraught Bess’ responses only lead to small talk at best. She wants to say more, but the gravity of the situation, and English not being her first language, contains her emotions to a few short phrases. Bess’ lover credits her awkwardness to immaturity. After all Bess is only 21, and he is 10 years her senior. ‘The next inbound train to Boston will be arriving in 5 minutes,” blares over the loud speaker. Bess’ lover ditches the kid gloves stating that the procedure is simple and in their best interest. In that moment the innocent immature Bess is gone forever.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN:

Bess – 20’s, female, Latina (Character is 21)
Must be comfortable with a bit of a foreign accent
Educated and articulate, soft spoken but not meek – Bess stands up for herself
Bess is about 8 weeks pregnant – but not showing. While it’s not necessary for the actress to have experienced a pregnancy, she should be able to express an understanding of the emotional connection with pregnancy and have an understanding of the physical, social, and economic, stress associated with pregnancy
Bess is a non-US citizen in an economic and social situation that requires her to make difficult choices.
There is no compensation other than refreshments and meals provided during the shoot. The 10 minute script will require several rehearsals and will shoot in one day.
