Papa, 40-50: Tall, brute, an intimidating and abusive drunkard, but certainly has a soft side; very traditional and doesn’t want his daughter to leave the nest. Very strong dramatic actor. Spanish role: fluency not required, but should be able to do an excellent Spanish accent.
Abuelo, 60-80: Average height, a bit heavy, very energetic and a great sense of humor. Rafiki in human form. Misses his dead daughter and believes in his granddaughter’s intelligence and ability more than she herself does. Spanish role: fluency not required, but should be able to do an excellent Spanish accent.
Elena, 25-35: Featured in a memory playing with her 8-year-old daughter and teaching her about airplanes; she is young, beautiful, understanding, and fiercely supportive of her daughter’s ambition to be a great mathematician. Tall and kind – think Miss Honey from Matilda. Spanish role; fluency not required, but should be able to do an excellent Spanish accent
Young Maria, 4-10: Young, bright and intelligent; a bit of an introvert, but extremely energetic with her mother – the Spanish love child of Amelie and Matilda. Spanish role; fluency not required, but should be able to do an excellent Spanish accent.
