CHARACTERS:

Grandma Kurnitz aged 70. Blunt,, stern immigrant from Germany; boundless capacity to love, but suppressed as a result of early tragedy. (Must speak with accent.)

Gert, another daughter, aged 40; noticeable breathing issue – tendency to suck in air while still speaking; resulted from trauma inflicted while young.

Louie, a son of Grandma Kurnitz, aged 38; flamboyant bag-man for the mob; role needs quiet but crucial note of malice.

Eddie, another son, aged 42; recent widower & father to Jay & Arty. Forced to find work out of town & must leave boys with Grandma; meek & compliant around Grandma; carries an air of defeatism, but loves his sons fiercely & will do anything to protect them.

Jay, a son of Eddie, aged 15; his mother’s death & his father’s departure forces him to be more mature than he is perhaps quite ready to be

Arty, younger son of Eddie, aged 13; more of an observer than the rest of the family; goes with the flow but sometimes seems childish.
