‘THE STORM: THE ORIGINAL MUSICAL’ CASTING CALL
“The Storm” is an original musical currently in development in New York City. Seeking strong performers for a special presentation at The Roosevelt Hotel on July 19, 2017. NOTE: See role breakdown below.
This will not be a full production; however, actors will be off-book and backed by a live band. There will be staging and choreography as well as basic lighting and simple costumes and props. Rehearsals will be held in the evenings. The commitment is approximately three weeks.
SYNOPSIS
On the night of her school’s annual concert, distinguished dance educator Marge Young gazes out from a backstage curtain and reflects on her storied career. Flashbacks trace her rise from a child star in Hollywood’s silent comedies to headlining prominent nightclubs and meeting her husband, Jim, a talented and popular pianist; as well as the couple’s theatrical clash of personalities; celebrated achievements; and a legacy best exemplified by the success of their students.
ROLES
MARGE YOUNG (Lead): Female, 75-88
60s-70s, or 50s to play older. A veteran of show business turned wife and dance educator. Older version of “MARGIE” and “YOUNG MARGIE” who narrates a life-long flashback. Poised. Captivating. Time-tested. Discerning. Strong actor. Good singer. Ability to move a plus. Vocal range: alto-soprano (classic musical theater torch song). Ethnicity: Caucasian.
MARGIE YOUNG (Lead): Female, 16-25
20s. A raven-haired, vibrant personality with a dazzling dance style. An older version of “YOUNG MARGIE” an early child star in the golden age of movies, who went on to headline nightclubs, marry “SHORTY”, and open a dancing school. Strong dancer in the styles of ballet and jazz required. Good actor. Good singer. Vocal range: alto-soprano (in the style of classic musical theater and American standards). Ethnicity: Caucasian.
SHORTY (Lead): Male, 23-35
20s-30s, or 40s to play younger. A popular pianist during the age of big bands and nightclubs. Good looks. Charismatic charm. Confident. Elopes with “MARGIE”. Must be able to play basic piano or better (classical / jazz pianist preferred). Good actor. Must be able/willing to be made up and play late 50s for one scene. Good singer (tenor preferred). Vocal range: baritone (in the style of classic musical theater and American standards). Ability to move a plus. JOSHUA (Supporting): Male, 15-20
20s. “MARGIE” and “SHORTY’s” grandson. A talented pianist with a personality to match his grandfather. Strong piano ability required (virtuoso classical / jazz pianist preferred). ELIZABETH (Supporting): Female, 33-42
20s-40s. “MARGIE” and “SHORTY’s” daughter; “JOSHUA’s” mother. A talented performer and dance educator in her own right. Radiant. Strong. Tender-hearted. Strong dancer in the styles of jazz and musical theater. Good actor. Good singer. Vocal range: soprano (in the style of classic musical theater and American standards). Ethnicity: Caucasian.
YOUNG MARGIE / YOUNG ELIZABETH (Supporting): Female, 3-7
A Shirley Temple type who can sing, dance, and act. Delightful. Outgoing. Ability to project and memorize a few lines is a must. All children are required be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Parent or guardian must remain at the audition / rehearsal site(s) at all times. Please be prepared to wait. Ethnicity: Caucasian.
MALE ENSEMBLE / TOM (Chorus / Ensemble): Male, 29-40
20 or older. “Tom” is a problem drinker, abusive husband, and “MARGIE’s” stepfather. Strong stage presence. Comfortable with various dance styles. Strong singer. Vocal range: bass (in the style of classic musical theater and American standards). Ethnicity: Caucasian.
FEMALE ENSEMBLE / BETTY (Chorus / Ensemble): Female, 27-40
20 or older. “BETTY” is a stage mother during the golden age of entertainment, who pushes her daughter “MARGIE” to be a big star. Strong stage presence. Comfortable with various dance styles. Strong singer. Vocal range: alto (in the style of classic musical theater and American standards). Ethnicity: Caucasian.
MALE ENSEMBLE / BRUCE (Chorus / Ensemble): Male, 25-40
20 or older. “BRUCE” is “MARGIE’s” self-serving manager. A weasel. Strong stage presence. Comfortable with various dance styles. Strong singer. Vocal range: tenor (in the style of classic musical theater and American standards). Ethnicity: All Ethnicities.
FEMALE ENSEMBLE / LORI (Chorus / Ensemble): Female, 16-25
18 or older. “LORI” is an alluring ballerina. Strong stage presence. Ballet required. Comfortable with various dance styles. Good singer. Vocal range: alto (in the style of classic musical theater and American standards). Ethnicity: All Ethnicities.

WHAT TO PREPARE
Please prepare one 32 bar song in the style of jazz, classic musical theater, or American standard that showcases your range. Bring sheet music. A pianist will be provided. You may be asked to learn a dance/movement combination following the vocal auditions. Be prepared with appropriate dance attire and footwear (character shoe or jazz sneaker). NOTE: Appointment required.
