ACTOR needed – male. “How Many Bushels Am I Worth?” is an original play by Kevin Olson and Bena Shklyanoy; directed by Kevin Olson. Performances over 3 weekends January 9-26, 2020 (14 performances total) in Providence, RI (AS220 95 Empire Black Box) and in Brooklyn NY (Mark O’Donnell Theater in downtown Brooklyn). Generous stipend ($2,000) and out of town travel/per diem included. Housing not included. Rehearsals begin in mid-December in Providence. Would need to be in NYC January 15-19 and January 22-26. Painting a picture of Bena Shklyanoy’s life in the Soviet Union, the play captures Bena and her family’s agonizing decision to flee the USSR. Facing the edge of the world they closed their eyes and jumped, arriving to the United States in the 1970’s with the help of the Save Soviet Jewry movement. FirstHand Theatrical creates and presents original theater productions using primary source material drawn mainly from diverse personal, cultural and social histories and other writing.

Rehearsals will start on December 16 with some time off for the Christmas holiday. Rehearsals will resume on Monday, December 30 in Providence at the AS220 95 Empire Black Box. Providence performances: Thursday, January 9-Sunday January 12. Brooklyn tech is on Wednesday, January 15 with performances from Thursday, January 16-Sunday, January 19 and again from Thursday, January 23-Sunday, January 26.

Kevin Olson holds a M.F.A. in Theatre Directing from the University of Minnesota and a B.S. in Speech and Theatre from SUNY Oneonta. He received a Twin Cities Drama Critics Circle KUDOS Award for his production of Brian Friel’s “Translations” at University of Minnesota Theatre. He has directed many productions over the years in many settings.

He serves as Adjunct Faculty at Providence College, the University of Rhode Island, the Community College of Rhode Island and the New England Institute of Technology. Previously he taught at Hope College in Holland, Michigan and at the University of Michigan, Flint. He teaches courses in Communications, Public Speaking, Theatre, Film and Popular Culture.

He established First Hand Theatrical in 2013 and has created five original scripts for the company. First Hand Theatrical creates original theater productions using primary source material drawn mainly from diverse cultural and social histories. He has directed productions of these scripts at the Piven Theatre in Evanston, IL, the Indianapolis Fringe Festival, URI Arts and Culture on the Feinstein campus, PVD Fringe, AS220 95 Empire Black Box and Artists Exchange in Cranston. He has also directed at the Actors’ Theatre of St. Paul, Park Square Theater, University of Minnesota Theatre, Hope College Theatre, The Minnesota Jewish Theatre Company, and The Lark Theatre.
He received a Twin Cities Drama Critics Circle KUDOS Award for his production of Brian Friel’s “Translations” and the Kendrick Wilson Directing award at University of Minnesota Theatre.
