The movie based on the trial of the Chicago 7 is in production and casting extras.
The period project is filming in Chicago this fall. Aaron Sorkin is behind the film which seemed to have some funding issues earlier but is set to go now. “The Trial of the Chicago 7” documents actual events that took place in the Vietnam war era and caused a social uproar in the country. Paramount Pictures, Cross Creek and Amblin Partners are all involved in the project.
The film’s cast includes Eddie Redmayne, Sacha Baron Cohen, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Frank Langella and Mark Rylance. Aaron Sorkin will be directing the project.
Set in the late 60’s, the story chronicles a very high profile trial of anti-war demonstrators. The Chicago Seven were seven defendants were arrested during a tumultuous time and their trials and situations made national headlines. The defendants included Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, David Dellinger, Tom Hayden, Rennie Davis, John Froines, and Lee Weiner. They were all charged with multiple crimes that included conspiracy, inciting a riot, and various other charges for their parts in anti-Vietnam War protests in Chicago.
The incident began on August 28, 1968, in Chicago. 1000’s of protesters joined a march that had violent consequences. Riot police clashed with protesters and deployed tear gas on the group. The rioting lasted days with many physical confrontations between the police and protesters. When the dust settled, there were many arrests and a federal grand jury decided to indict 8 demonstrators and 8 police officers. The number of protesters was later dropped to seven. The trials lasted for over a year with verdicts coming down in early 1970.
