A white, upper Eastside, uptight, troubled family: Casey, a medical school student home for Chanukah at her mother Anna’s Manhattan upper west side apartment, tries vainly to get her mother Anna to take her head out of her scholarly notebooks and pay her some attention. When Paul, Casey’s older brother and peripatetic poet-songwriter, shows up, he refuses to speak to the preoccupied Anna, but pulls out a menorah given to him by his father, who recently left Anna, feeling he was second to her work. The menorah unleashes Anna’s rage and grief about her husband. The family finally makes moves toward coming together as Casey and Paul light the menorah and Anna joins in to eat a meal of latkes.
