Extras casting call for “West Side Story”
The Hollywood and Broadway classic, West Side Story, is currently being made into a new film and looks like production in the New York City area is underway as there will be an open casting call in New York City later this month for area locals who would like to work as paid movie extras.
Some months back there was an open casting call for one of the movie’s lead roles, but looks like that role has now been cast and filming is beginning.
Westside Story was a hit musical that was set in the 50’s. It revolved around New York City and it’s rival gangs during the 50’s. Rumor has it that Westside Story was actually inspired by William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. The story focuses on a love affair between a young man and a young woman and all the obstacles that are standing in their way. The original United Artists West Side Story movie starred Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer, Rita Moreno, George Chakiris and Russ Tamblyn.
According to Vanity Fair, Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story Will Go Back to Basics, or so they say. The Vanity Fair story about the upcoming FOX feature film stated that the movie’s screenwriter, Tony Kushner, suggested that the remake of West Side Story will more closely follow the original Broadway show, rather than the Oscar-winning musical that came out in 1961. He went on to say that “no one will leave the movie without hearing all the classic songs.”
Steven Spielberg has cast actor Ansel Elgort for the lead male role. Elgort landed the male lead, Tony, one of the NY gang members that falls for the female lead, Maria.
The movie is looking to cast extras of all ages and types. Casting directors at New York’s GWC are looking for men, women and kids of all ethnicities that can pull off a non-modern, 1950’s look. The production is especially interested in Latino extras or those wanting to be background actors on the movie.
