Play summary:
Native Gardens, by Karen Zacarías, is a current and clever play about a backyard border dispute between a young, Latino couple and an older, white couple. It erupts into a hilarious battle of class, age, ethnicity, taste, and consequential bad manners. TheatreWorks of Silicon Valley produced the west coast premier of Native Gardens last season.
Setting: a northwest Washington D.C. neighborhood.
Roles:
Tania Del Valle (late 20’s-early 30’s): Latinx/from New Mexico, Ph.D. candidate, eight months pregnant
Pablo Del Valle (early 30’s): Latinx/ Chilean-American, attorney at a highly successful D.C. law firm, married to Tania
Virginia Butley (late 50s early 60’s): no-nonsense executive for a defense contractor, second-wave feminist, centrist Republican
Frank Butley (60s): Semi-retired, proud of his carefully-maintained garden, married to Virginia, centrist Republican
Four Extras: Gomez Landscaping, Surveyor, Inspector.
