CASTING CALL: NEPALI-SPEAKING TALENT

Location: Los Angeles, CA

Type: Film

Seeking talent who are FLUENT NEPALI SPEAKERS for CSUN Thesis Film. Shoots April 1-6 in Los Angeles under the SAG-AFTRA Student Film Agreement. Rate: $125/day Deferred + copy/credit/meals. Both SAG and non-union talent can submit. Actors and non-actors welcome.

ROLES:
[TANKA] 30 to 45 years old, South Asian male. Nepali. Tanka is an undocumented immigrant worker (Tandoori chef) in a restaurant. He has been in the United States for almost five years now. He comes from a poor family and is responsible for sending almost all his income back to his family in Nepal. He does not have a work authorization, so his employer takes advantage of him by making him work 12+ hours a day for less than minimum pay, and he ends up sleeping in the restaurant. He’s always been a hustler and never had a loving family. He compares himself with other fortunate people and develops a sense of being unwanted and rejected. His closest friend is a server, Hanna, who shows him kindness and helps him get a place to stay. Cooking background a plus, should be comfortable working in a kitchen. [RANI] 45 to 60 years old, South Asian female. Nepali. Rani is an independent entrepreneur who came to the United States with a dream of becoming successful. She is an attractive upper-middle-class woman. She started out as a server in a restaurant and now she owns three restaurants, two stores and multiple real estates. She believes that workers should not be given too much freedom or else they will take advantage of her, however she helps undocumented workers by giving them a chance to work in her restaurant even at the risk of being shut down. [DAD (V.O.)] 55 to 75 years old, South Asian male. Nepali. Tanka’s dad is a farmer who worked all his life to get out of poverty. He did just well enough to put food on the table and a roof over his family’s head. He lives in a patriarchal society, so he believes that the man should provide for the family. He fears that his son might succumb to the Western culture and stop sending much needed money to the family. He’s very stubborn and rarely apologizes. [MOM (V.O.)] 50 to 70 years old, South Asian female. Nepali. Tanka’s mom got married to her husband when she was eighteen years old. Growing up in an extreme patriarchal society, she wasn’t sent to school. She’s very proud of her son for being able to survive in the foreign country and send money home.
