little trumpet is a short film that follows a day in the life of 9-year-old Javon as he navigates loss, isolation, and childhood innocence in the fast-moving city of New Orleans amidst its traditions of violence and survival.
JAVON – Male, 7-12
Ethnicity: Black. New Orleans/Louisiana accent required. Must be able to ride a bike.
Javon is a shy, quiet, observant young boy who keeps it all in, a kid who’s had to grow up too fast. His only escape from his harsh reality is his dream of playing trumpet in the band like his older brothers.
JEANETTE – Female, 35-55
Ethnicity: Black. New Orleans/Louisiana accent required.
Jeanette is Javon’s depressed, homebody single mother – a woman who’s let herself go. Jeanette spends her days chain-smoking and drinking in front of the TV, anxious and agitated. She’s strict and controlling of her sons.
DAMON – Male, 16-22
Ethnicity: Black. New Orleans/Louisiana accent required.
Damon’s a hustler – an independent, rebellious teenager living a double life. He thinks he’s invincible – but he’s not. He’s his younger brotherJavon’s whole world, a pseudo father figure for Javon.
E – Male, 20-27
Ethnicity: Black. New Orleans/Louisiana accent required.
E is the neighborhood drug dealer. Flashy and confident, a hood soldier with street credibility. He’s menacing, threatening – but he’s also charming and has a teasing quality, a playfulness with an air of danger.
