BITCHCRAFT: BLACK UNICORNS, WHITE TEARS, RAINBOWS & OTHER UNCOMFORTABLE TRUTHS FOR UPTIGHT WYPIPO
By Jennie Wright

Project Description:
I am pleased to announce that “Bitchcraft” was awarded an Artswave FY 2021 Truth & Reconciliation Grant for Brown and Black People. As a Theatre Maker, I have a passion for devised and scripted theatre-making processes that involve working with womxn and subject matter on the margins. Especially those relating to concepts of identity, role expectation and justice.
In that tradition “Bitchcraft” seeks to amplify marginalized voices. It is about hearing, valuing and believing the lived experiences of people that may not look nor live like one another. “Bitchcraft” hopes to convey the realization that as humans on this planet our destinies are inextricably linked. Honoring the experiences, needs and challenges of the ‘least’ of us enriches the lives of all of us and provides a framework for collaboration and healing.
“Bitchcraft” is an immersive work using spoken word poetry, original music, popular music and dance to reveal what happens when marchers from several unrelated and even opposing protests are forced to take shelter from a heavy- handed police attempt to shut-down a night of protests in Cincinnati, OH.
As a result, BLM protestors, tiki torch touting Patriots, Women’s Rights advocates, Climate Change and LGBTQIA activists stumble upon squatters experiencing homelessness and shelter in place against a barrage of tear gas and rubber bullets volleyed at them by a rogue police unit.
Through the course of a perilous night each group of protestors share their respective views in the form of spoken word monologues delivered by representatives from their groups. Fear and forced unity against a common foe result in a night of sharing views, spirited debate, song, dance and an elevation of consciousness for all.

Character Breakdowns:
MAMA IRIS: 60-70 Years old, African American woman. She is a spiritually grounded seasoned, freedom fighter. She is a compassionate, yet fiery earth mother who exudes wisdom.

DHARMA: Middle-aged, hippie, climate change Marshall.
