About the play:

It’s an exciting summer day in 1956 for Hilda and Sam Fluck.

Newly on their own since their thirty something children Gary and Janey moved out, they are finally ready to relax. Hilda plans to hang her laundry while Sam goes to buy a shiny new television. What could disturb their simple peace?

Turns out doors are merely decoration as their children, Gary and Janey, literally fall over the fence into the backyard, looking for help out of sticky situations.

Gary has lost his job, is enamoured with his new girlfriend, Bobbi, and running from a bookie named Beverly, while the ever-dependent Janey has unexpectedly left her husband.

The family careens into an afternoon of calamity, showing them that ultimately they must celebrate how they can be together rather than apart.

Norm Foster’s heartwarming, hilarious and relatable comedy proves that there will always be a significant weight to an empty nest.

Roles:

  • Hilda Fluck: Female Lead, 50s-60s – Appears to be naïve and vulnerable but has a great maternal strength about her and really is the glue that holds the family together.
  • Sam Fluck: Male Lead, 50s-60s – Hilda’s husband. The family breadwinner, works at a paper products manufacturing plant. Feels unappreciated by employer. Excited to finally become an empty-nester.
  • Gary Fluck: Male Lead, 25- 30s – Son, WW2 veteran who lived with parents until recently. Affected by war, making poor choices, relies on parents, lost!
  • Janey Fluck: Female Lead 25- 30s – Daughter, married, comes across as spoiled “Daddy’s girl”, but her true self is much deeper.
  • Bobbi Jakes: Female Supporting Role, early 30s – Gary’s love interest, musician, hip and free-spirited…think 1960s hippy.
  • Beverly Woytowich: Male Supporting Role, 30s-50s – A gangster-type. Gary owes an outstanding gambling debt and Bev shows up there to collect it! Very intelligent and well spoken for a thug.
