Actor Auditions – 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.
The “25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” is a delightful and quirky musical that offers a hilarious and heartwarming glimpse into the lives of a group of eclectic young spellers as they compete in a fictional county’s annual spelling bee. With its witty humor, catchy songs, and endearing characters, the musical skillfully combines laughter and poignancy as it explores themes of competition, self-discovery, and the challenges of growing up. Each character brings their unique quirks and insecurities to the stage, creating a relatable and entertaining narrative that celebrates both the triumphs and trials of adolescence. The show’s lighthearted yet touching portrayal of these young spellers’ journeys has made it a beloved favorite among theater enthusiasts.
Production will take place at TheatreWorks in Connecticut.
TheatreWorks in New Milford, Connecticut, is a vibrant and well-respected community theater that has been a cornerstone of the local arts scene for many years. Founded in 1968, TheatreWorks has played a significant role in enriching the cultural landscape of the region by producing a diverse range of theatrical performances, workshops, and events.
The production is looking for 9 Adults to complete the cast of the “spellers” and “adults”.
Roles available
- RONA LISA PERETTI (Female):. Vocal Range: B3-F5: Should have both a high belt and improv skills. Along with Panch, she guides the comedy of the show and the audience volunteers.
- DOUGLAS PANCH (Male): The Vice Principal. We are looking for a strong character actor with impeccable comic timing and the ability to improv. While he does not need to sing, he is the most important role in the entire show.
- CHIP TOLENTINO (Male): Vocal Range: C3-B4. This role has some of the most difficult singing in the show and requires long sustained high notes.
- LOGAINNE SCHWARTZANDGRUNIERRE (SCHWARTZY) (Female): Speller #1. Logainne is the youngest and most politically aware speller, often making comments about current political figures and her mature world views. She speaks with a lisp though has a real confidence about her at times. Vocal Range: A3-F5
- LEAF CONEYBEAR (Male or Female):. This role allows a ton of personal interpretation and requires physical comedy. Vocal Range: A2-A4
- WILLIAM BARFEE (Male): Vocal Range: E2-B4. This role requires a strong character actor with impeccable comic timing and the ability to create his own character. He should have a strong character voice.
- MARCY PARK (Female):. Marcy is the most feared and practiced competitor in the bee. ” She is also not allowed to cry. Vocal Range: C4-E5.
- OLIVE OSTROVSKY (Female): She starts enormously shy, and shyly blossoms. Vocal Range: B3-F5
- MITCH/MEG MAHONEY (Male or Female): The Official Comfort Counselor. They come across as scary and tough but are really a big softy deep down. Vocal Range: E2-B4.
Auditions:
Sunday September 10th from 1 to 4 pm (at TheatreWorks, 5 Brookside Avenue, New Milford) and Monday September 11th from 7 to 9:30 pm (at United Methodist Church 68 Danbury Rd, New Milford)
Sign Up is encouraged, but Walk-ins and Virtual Submissions welcome. Requests to schedule alternate audition days/times are welcome.
The audition will include a reading from provided sides and a vocal performance consisting of 32 bars of a song that showcases your range (songs from Spelling Bee are allowed). There will likely be an accompanist, so please come prepared with both sheet music and a backing track on your phone or tablet if possible. Please consider character voices where applicable.
The production will run December 8 – 31 (New Year’s Gala Fundraiser) at Theatreworks, New Milford CT.
