Auditions for Purple Rain Musical.
The Purple Rain musical will premiere in Minneapolis in early 2025 and casting directors for the upcoming musical production are holding online auditions to fill some famous roles such as Apollonia and Morris Day.
Purple Rain is a stage musical inspired by the iconic 1984 film and the music of Prince. It follows the story of The Kid, a talented but troubled musician, navigating the challenges of love, ambition, and personal struggles while striving to make his mark in the Minneapolis music scene. Purple Rain features musical performances of classic hits like “Purple Rain,” “When Doves Cry,” and “Let’s Go Crazy.”

Dynamic and talented performers are needed for the stage musical adaptation of “Purple Rain.” Below are the roles and their descriptions:
The Kid:
- Age: 18+ (appears 18-25)
- Ethnicity: Person of color
- Description: A musical prodigy, frontman of his band. The central character who navigates his artistic journey, balancing ego and emotion. Must excel in music and singing, with proficiency in guitar and piano, and an extensive vocal range including falsetto. Additional instrument skills are a plus.
- Original Role: Played by Prince.
Apollonia:
- Age: 18+ (appears 18-25)
- Ethnicity: Woman of color
- Description: A vibrant aspiring actor-singer-dancer, new waitress at The First. Her infectious energy and talent captivate everyone, despite facing heartbreak and adventure. Must be an exceptional singer and harmonizer.
Wendy:
- Age: 20s-30s
- Ethnicity: Open
- Gender: She/her
- Description: Guitarist in the rock band. Confident, outspoken, and humorous, she stands firm in her beliefs. Must play or learn guitar and be skilled in singing and harmonies. All voice parts welcome.
Lisa:
- Age: 20s-30s
- Ethnicity: Open
- Gender: She/her
- Description: Keyboardist in the rock band. Responsible, level-headed, and keeps Wendy grounded. Must play or learn keys and excel in singing and harmonies. All voice parts welcome.
Doc:
- Age: 20s-30s
- Ethnicity: Open
- Gender: He/him
- Description: Keyboardist in the rock band. The empathetic “teddy bear” who supports his peers. Must play or learn keys and excel in singing and harmonies. All voice parts welcome.
Bobby:
- Age: 20s-30s

- Gender: He/him
- Description: Drummer in the rock band. Focused on music, avoiding drama. Must play or learn drums and excel in singing and harmonies. All voice parts welcome.
Mark:

- Description: Bassist in the rock band. Easygoing, focused on enjoying music. Must play or learn bass and excel in singing and harmonies. All voice parts welcome.
Billy:

- Description: Owner of The First, an old friend of The Kid’s parents, and Morris’s uncle. Tries to mentor young musicians but prioritizes the club’s success. Rumored to have a colorful past. Must sing and be skilled in harmonies, with a preference for a strong lower register.
Morris:
- Age: 20s-30s
- Ethnicity: Black
- Gender: He/him
- Description: The Kid’s rival, frontman of The Time, and creator of The Six. Charismatic and ambitious, with a knack for finding an audience. Must sing and be skilled in harmonies. All voice parts welcome.
Jerome:
- Age: 20s-30s

- Gender: He/him
- Description: Morris’s sidekick, always involved in Morris’s schemes. Must sing and be skilled in harmonies. All voice parts welcome.
Jill:
- Age: 20s-30s

- Description: Waitress at The First and member of The Six. Ambitious, humorous, and plays saxophone. Must sing and excel in harmonies. Performers who play or are willing to learn saxophone are welcome.
Brenda:
- Age: 20s

- Gender: She/her
- Description: Waitress at The First and reluctantly part of Morris’s group. Energetic and unaware of her lack of talent. Must be a strong alto singer and skilled in harmonies. Drumming ability is a plus or willingness to learn.
Susan:

- Gender: She/her
- Description: Waitress at The First, involved in Morris’s group. Bold and lively, unafraid to put herself out there. Must sing and excel in harmonies. Guitar skills or willingness to learn are welcome.
Father:
- Age: 50s

- Gender: He/him
- Description: The Kid’s haunted father, who also plays the Cab Driver. Must sing and excel in harmonies. Piano skills or willingness to learn are preferred.
Chick:
- Age: 30s-50s
- Ethnicity: Open

- Description: The bouncer at The First, always ready for action. Must sing and excel in harmonies. All voice parts welcome.
Performers should be prepared to showcase their musical and vocal talents, with an openness to learning new instruments if required.
