Auditions Announced for South Pacific at Beaty Theater

Talented performers invited to audition for Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific in Fort Greg-Adams in Virginia. Please note that the theater is on a military base and those auditioning will need permission to get on the base.

The Homefront Players, in partnership with Beaty Theater, are holding auditions for Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific, running May 2–18, 2025. Auditions will take place January 12–13 at Beaty Theater, with callbacks on January 15.

Performers should prepare a one-minute Golden Age vocal piece with sheet music, dress for movement, and be ready to read from the script.  Rehearsals begin in March.

Audition Process

  • Sign-Up: Auditions will be scheduled in groups. Reserve your time slot at SignUpGenius.
  • Arrival: Arrive 15–20 minutes early to complete paperwork. Each audition group will last approximately one hour.
  • Preparation:
    • Prepare a one-minute vocal piece from a Rodgers and Hammerstein or other Golden Age musical.
    • Bring sheet music in the appropriate key (an accompanist will be provided).
    • Be ready for movement and dressed appropriately for a dance audition.
    • You may also be asked to read from the script.

Roles: SOUTH PACIFIC- PRINCIPLE and SUPPORTING ROLES

Ensign Nellie Forbush
Female
Age: 25-35
Vocal Range: Mezzo-Soprano to Db5 with good belt
Accent: American (South)
Confident, outgoing, comedic, and romantic. Requires excellent vocal, acting and dance skills.
An unsophisticated girl from Little Rock, Arkansas, she is perky and vibrant, in love with Emile, but with doubts about their relationship.

Emile De Becque
Gender: Male
Age: 40+
Vocal Range: Bass-Baritone
Requires strong singing and acting skills

Accent: French

A middle-aged, wealthy planter in love with Nellie, but fears their different backgrounds might affect their love.

Lt. Joseph Cable, United States Marine Corps
Gender: Male
Age: 20+
Vocal Range: Strong Tenor E3-G4

Requires strong singing and acting skills
Accent: American
Young Marine officer, a patriotic, brave hometown boy, in love with Liat.

Bloody Mary
Gender: Female
Age: 30+
Vocal Range: Mezzo-Soprano to C5 with good belt
Appearance & Accent: Polynesian
Polynesian woman, mother of Liat. Strong comedic role requiring excellent singing and acting skills. A “wheeler-dealer”, she is a loveable rascal with a constant shrieking, cackling laugh.

Seabee Luther Billis
Gender: Male
Age: 30+
Voice Range: Bass-Baritone down to G2
Accent: American
Prime comedic role – Ensemble singing and dancing. A career navy man, he is a likeable entrepreneur. He worships Nellie and would do anything for her.

Cmdr. William Harbison, United States Navy
Gender: Male
Age: 30-40+
Vocal Range: Any (spoken role)
Accent: American
Strong military bearing and voice. Ensemble singing and dancing.
Executive Officer to Captain Brackett, Harbison is hard and uncompromising.

Capt. George Brackett, United States Navy
Gender: Male
Age: 30+
Vocal Range: Any (spoken role).
Accent: American
Military bearing and voice, strong actor. Ensemble singing and dancing.
Brackett is a career Navy officer, all business, but with a sensitive side.

Liat – Bloody Mary’s daughter
Gender: Female
Age: 16+
Vocal Range: Any
Appearance & Accent: Polynesian (Minimal singing and dialogue)
Pretty, young daughter of Bloody Mary. Speaks no English and only a little French. She is in love with Lt. Cable.

Ngana – Emile’s daughter
Age: 8-12
Vocal Range: Child Alto (Mezzo-Soprano equivalent)
Appearance: Polynesian
Polynesian daughter of Emile De Becque. She speaks only French, and must act and sing.

Jerome – Emile’s son
Age: 8-12
Vocal Range: Unbroken voice (Mezzo-soprano equivalent)
Appearance: Polynesian
Polynesian son of Emile De Becque. He speaks only French and must act and sing.
