Theater Auditions in Bowie Maryland for “Sister Act” Musical

AUDITIONS JUNE 10 & 11, 2024

Rehearsals will take place from June 22-September 21 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7-10pm and Saturdays from 11am-3pm at at All Saints Lutheran Church (16510 Mt Oak Rd, Bowie, MD 20716). Not all performers will be required at every rehearsal and major holidays will be avoided in rehearsal scheduling. Occasional additional rehearsals may be added if needed, with plenty of notice to performers regarding time and location.

IN-PERSON AUDITIONS:

Auditions: Monday, June 10 & Tuesday, June 11 from 7-10pm; Auditioners will be required for a one-hour timeslot.

Callbacks: Saturday, June 15 starting at 11am, by invitation only. Not all roles will require a callback, but all auditioners should keep Saturday clear in case you are called back. If you are needed for callbacks, you will be notified by email by Friday.

Location of Auditions and Callbacks: The Bowie Playhouse, 16500 White Marsh Park, Bowie, MD 20715

Music: Prepare a vocal piece, 16-32 bars in length, that shows your vocal range and provide annotated sheet music in the correct key. A piano accompanist will be provided for you to sing with. No songs from Sister Act, please. (You will have an opportunity to sing from the show if you are asked to attend callbacks.)

Dance: Please also come prepared to learn a short dance combination. Dance shoes or sneakers are preferred — please do not plan to dance in just socks or bare feet.

2nd Star is an all-volunteer organization and all performance roles are unpaid. Production Team members and 2nd Star personel are also unpaid volunteers.

Roles:

NOTE: Ages and gender identities are those of the character. All listed identifiers are in accordance with the agreement with MTI and the options provided by the book writers in the script.

Deloris Van Cartier
An aspiring performer, trying to find both fame and a place in the world. When forced to hide in the convent, she initially refuses to embrace her new lifestyle but learns to embrace it when she works with the choir. Loud-mouthed, and sassy, but ultimately caring.
Gender: Female identifying; Age: 25 to 35; Vocal range: F#5 to E3

Mother Superior
The head of the convent, sarcastic and a bit stiff. Extremely protective about keeping her sisters away from the outside world, which puts her in direct opposition to Deloris and her musical teachings.
Gender: Female identifying; Age: 50 to 70, Vocal range: E5 to D3

Sister Mary Robert
A postulant, abandoned as a baby and raised at the convent. Shy and soft-spoken, but singing with Deloris lets her find her voice. Her wallflower lifestyle has made her live a shell of a life.
Gender: Female identifying; Age: 16 to 25; Vocal range: A5 to F#3

Sister Mary Patrick
A nun of the convent. Consistently perky, enthusiastic, and easily excitable.
Gender: Female identifying; Age: 35 to 50

Sister Mary Lazarus
A nun of the convent and the head of the choir. Rather deadpan and the least welcoming of any of the nuns, but she gets caught up in Deloris’s soul music.
Gender: Female identifying; Age: 50 to 70; Vocal range: B4 to F3

Monsignor O’hara
One of the heads of the convent. Constantly concerned with financial matters, though soul music surprisingly puts him in a different mood.
Gender: Male identifying; Age: 45 to 60; Vocal range top: G4 to E3

Curtis
A club owner, notorious gangster, and Deloris’s boyfriend. Cocky and controlling, always on the verge of violence.
Gender: Male identifying; Age: 30 to 40; Vocal range: Ab4 to A2

Eddie Souther
The desk chief at the Philadelphia police station and a high school classmate of Deloris who helps get her into hiding. Faces a lot of nerves when under pressure, causing him to sweat profusely. He still yearns for Deloris after all these years, and dreams of being her hero.

Tj
Curtis’s nephew and one of his thugs. Deft and cognizant of the fact, constantly in a state of ignorant bliss.
Gender: Male identifying; Age: 16 to 30; Vocal range: Eb5 to Db3

Joey
One of Curtis’s thugs. Believes himself to be quite the ladies’ man.
Gender: Male identifying; Age: 30 to 40; Vocal range top: Eb5 to Bb2

Pablo
One of Curtis’s thugs. A natural follower, constantly speaks in Spanish.
Gender: Male identifying; Age: 25 to 40; Vocal range top: F5 to C4

Sister Mary Martin-of-tours
A nun of the convent. Clearly in her own world, but has her moments of surprising clarity.
Gender: Female identifying; Age: 40 to 60

Sister Mary Theresa
A nun of the convent, the oldest of the group. Decrepit at a glance, but secretly packs a punch.
Gender: Female identifying; Age: 60 to 70

Michelle
One of Deloris’s back-up singers. Lippy and always quick with a retort.
Gender: Female identifying; Age: 20 to 30; Vocal range: F5 to Bb3

Tina
One of Deloris’s back-up singers. A little thick and naive.
Gender: Female identifying; Age: 20 to 30; Vocal range: F5 to Ab3

Ernie
One of Curtis’s thugs. Initially thought to be a mindless yes-man, he turns out to be an undercover police informant.
Gender: Male identifying; Age: 25 to 35

Ensemble: Nuns; Bar Denizens (Bar Patron, Waitress, Pool Player, Drag Queen); Homeless People; Fantasy Dancers; Some opportunities for children will be available in the ensemble.
