Theater Auditions in TwentyNine Palms, CA for “Man of La Mancha”

By | January 2, 2024

Theatre 29, in Twentynine Palms, California, invites individuals to participate in open auditions for the timeless and Tony Award-winning Broadway Musical, “Man of La Mancha,” to be held at Theatre 29, 73637 Sullivan Road, Twentynine Palms, on Monday, January 8, 2024, starting at 6:00 pm.

Rehearsals are set to be held on Tuesday, January 9.

About the theater:

Theatre 29, established in 1999, operates as an all-volunteer Community Theatre organization.

Adapted from The Adventures of Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes y Saavedra, “Man of La Mancha” serves as a tragicomic exploration of humanity’s quest for self-improvement and the desire to enhance the world. Originating as a satirical burlesque of chivalry novels, the narrative evolves into a more profound, broader, and compassionate depiction of the adventures of an eccentric idealist in a hostile, avaricious, and cynical world. The allegorical tale, emphasizing the oppressive battle against eternal evil, juxtaposes comic and dramatic moments in the hero’s attempts to rectify the world’s wrongs. Despite moments of seeming inadequacy, the audience is left with no uncertainty regarding the purity of intent in his self-imposed quest.

The musical score comprises 16 numbers, including the poignant “The Impossible Dream,” delivering one of the most touching moments in musical theatre as Don Quixote articulates his personal credo.

The production offers 19 speaking and singing roles, predominantly for adults (no one under 16 will be cast). Directed by Gary Daigneault, with musical direction by Bianca Stoker and choreography by Lisa Hodgson, the same team behind “My Son Pinocchio: Geppetto’s Musical Tale,” the auditions welcome a diverse range of singers, dancers, and actors. Prospective candidates should come prepared to perform a song from a Broadway show, and a monologue will be provided for reading.

Roles:

Don Quixote (Cervantes) – Dual role demanding top-notch acting and a powerful singing performance
Aldonza – Accomplished actress with a powerful voice
Sancho – Comic character, male, with singing role
Padre – Legit tenor voice
Dr. Carrasco – Straight role
Captain of Inquisition – Straight role
Barber – Comic singer
Antonia – Legit voice

The remaining company will serve as Muleteers, male dancers, and a guitarist, contributing to strong choral work.

“Man of La Mancha” is scheduled for 12 performances across three weekends, from March 1 to 17, with Friday and Saturday night shows at 7:00 pm and Sunday matinees at 2:30 pm. Ticket prices are $15.00 for regular admission, $12.50 for seniors and military, and $10.00 for children under 12 and students with ID (plus a service charge).
