Audition for “Hair” at CDC Theatre in Cranford, New Jersey in the Newark, New Jersey area.

The open call auditions for Hair, the iconic American tribal rock love musical, taking place on Monday, January 15th, and Wednesday, January 17th, 2024, at 7 p.m. at CDC Theatre.

“Hair,” the groundbreaking American tribal rock love musical, emerged during the late 1960s, capturing the essence of the counterculture and advocating for peace, love, and freedom. Premiering in 1967, the musical, with book and lyrics by Gerome Ragni and James Rado, and music by Galt MacDermot, became a symbol of the era’s social and political upheaval.

Set against the backdrop of the Vietnam War, “Hair” follows a group of politically active, free-spirited young individuals known as the “tribe.” Central to the narrative is Claude, a young man facing the draft, grappling with his identity, and questioning societal norms. The characters explore love, identity, and the search for meaning, all underscored by an energetic and memorable score.

Roles:

Sheila: F, 20s. She is a wild and dynamic activist with the political t-shirts and buttons to prove it. A student at NYU. Her passionate involvement in things, be it causes or people, can be a source of humor for onlookers. Obsessed with Berger. Alto with strong belt.

Berger: M, 20s, but the more youthful looking the better. He is bright, funny, loud, wild and playful, but serious underneath. Charismatic and entertaining, he loves to make people laugh. He functions as the comic center of the show but goes from being comic to a tragic figure at the end. In other words, this is a role for a performer with great comic and dramatic skills. Tenor.

Claude: M, 20s. Berger’s best friend. He is gentle, the embodiment of the flower power ethos. A harmonious, ordered, balanced character, artistic, blissed-out, kind and funny. Reads all the newspapers and is concerned about the war and the state of the human condition. Tolerant and open he loves everyone in the Tribe and provides them with an emotional center. Obsessed with Sheila. Tenor.

Woof: M, 20s but the more youthful looking the better. He is sexy, good looking, masculine but with an androgynous quality. A free-love nature freak granola boy. He is very much in his own world, a bit of a space cadet. Baritone.

Hud: M, 20s. African-American male. He has an energetic personality. He is both intellectual and street hip. He scans the New York Times and the East Village. At times he is like a wise overseer. Baritone.
Jeanie: F, 20s. She wears long hippie dresses and is the earth mother of the group both figuratively and literally as she is pregnant. Dry sense of humor, hippie freak granola woman. Obsessed with Claude. Alto with strong belt.

Dionne: F, 20s. African-American. She is warm and compassionate. A strong presence with a strong sense of justice and irony. Alto with strong belt.

Crissy: F, Late teens – early 20s but to play as young as possible. She is the youngest tribe member. She is pretty, innocent and vulnerable. Loves the idea of the Tribe, her new chosen family. Alto/Mezzo with belt.
Tribe: Multi-cultural group of people who are present throughout the piece. Solos and smaller roles will be cast from the Tribe. All vocals types.

One of the musical’s distinctive features is its interaction with the audience, breaking the fourth wall and inviting spectators to join the celebration of the tribe’s unapologetic embrace of individuality and nonconformity. The musical’s anthems, including “Aquarius,” “Let the Sunshine In,” and the titular “Hair,” became iconic expressions of the era’s ideals.

The venue is situated at 78 Winans Ave. in Cranford, NJ.

Auditioners must be 18 years or older and are required to prepare a 32-bar cut of a pop/rock song not featured in the show.
