Altarena Playhouse Announces Auditions for Good People
Altarena Playhouse in Alameda, CA, is seeking actors for its upcoming production of Good People by David Lindsay-Abaire, directed by Russell Kaltschmidt. This compelling and darkly humorous play delves into class struggles, resilience, and the pursuit of opportunity.
Performance & Rehearsal Details:
- Performance Dates: August 22 – September 21, 2025 (Fridays & Saturdays at 8 PM, Sundays at 2 PM)
- Audition Dates:
- Saturday, March 15 at 12 PM (by appointment)
- Sunday, March 16 at 12 PM (by appointment)
- Callbacks: Saturday, March 22 at 2 PM (by invitation)
- Rehearsals Begin: July 1, 2025
- Location: Altarena Playhouse, 1409 High Street, Alameda, CA
- Compensation: $400 reimbursement for expenses
- Eligibility: Non-Equity actors only. Performers of all races, ethnicities, and genders are encouraged to audition.
The Good People Play:
Set in South Boston, Good People follows Margaret, a middle-aged single mother struggling to make ends meet after losing her job. In a desperate bid for stability, she reaches out to Mike, a former boyfriend who has escaped their working-class neighborhood and built a successful life as a doctor. As their worlds collide, Margaret must navigate old resentments, class divides, and the possibility of a second chance—all with sharp wit and raw honesty.

- Margaret: A tough, working-class mother in her early 50s, determined to provide for her daughter.
- Stevie: A working-class man in his late 20s, Margaret’s former manager.
- Dottie: Margaret’s surly landlord and occasional babysitter, mid-60s.
- Jean: Margaret’s outspoken and fiercely loyal friend, around 50.
- Kate: A sophisticated African American woman in her early 30s, Mike’s wife.
- Mike: A successful doctor in his early 50s, originally from South Boston.
Audition Requirements:
- Please bring a printed headshot and résumé.
- Audition sides will be provided in advance—no monologue required.
- A Boston accent is encouraged for all characters except Mike and Kate (though not required for initial auditions).
- Suggested ages are flexible, though Margaret, Mike, and Jean should appear as peers.
